Frequent Flyer Food Fight

A few topics never fail to inspire passionate debate amongst frequent flyers:

  • Upgrade availability, or lack thereof
  • Award chart changes
  • And, of course … ice cream sundaes

Ice cream sundaes?

KnightInWhiteSatin posted an open suggestion to United Airlines, offering a slew of alternatives to the “tired” sundae served in BusinessFirst. Amongst his recommendations:

  • Tres Leches
  • Pumpkin Napolean
  • Clementine and Ginger Rugelach
  • Baklava ice cream

Baklava ice cream. Oh yeah, it’s a real thing. I Googled it.

Curses on you KnightInWhiteSatin. Now that I know such a thing exists I’m not sure I will be able to continue this blog. Hell, I might not be able to finish this post. All I can think about now is scouring my city to see if anyone serves Baklava ice cream.

But back to the topic at hand … topics that inspire debate amongst frequent flyers.

At the time of this writing, this subject of United’s tired ice cream sundaes has generated nearly 150 replies! With both supporters of new offerings and defenders of the current sundae chiming in.

The sundae is awful. Cheap ice cream substitute. Classic UA penny pinching. I’d love to see it replaced, except they’ll just replace it with something equally cheap. ~Kacee

No, I love those sundaes! Plus, it’s a good way to wash away the sour taste of the food they serve before it ~dank0014

I like the sundae. I would suggest that either they leave the ice cream out for a few minutes before serving it, or supply chain saws so you can actually eat it. ~Tchiowa

I deliberately pick sundae flights. Yes, I’m a glutton. ~Mats

And speaking of passion, scracer14 makes an impassioned plea to delete the thread topic entirely:

This post should disappear. Anything that reads “UA should get rid of X and replace with Y”

Is interpreted by management as “UA should get rid of X and Z”

While I’m one of the few who don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other, I must admit that should any airline offer a Baklava ice cream dessert I might begin choosing my flights similarly to how Mats chooses his.
